Great Labels Turns 29: A Westside Legacy in Designer Resale Fashion

"Can you believe we are celebrating 29 years? From the very first dress to the thousands of unique pieces that have found new homes through our doors, it has been an absolute joy and privilege to be part of your style journey. This milestone isn't just about us; it's a testament to you, our amazing community of women who embrace sustainable fashion. Thank you for your loyalty, laughter, and stories, and for making Great Labels a vibrant hub for sustainable fashion and even more beautiful connections."

- Andrea Waters, Owner of Great Labels

As one of the oldest consignment stores in LA, we've seen it all, and you've stuck with us through it all. With changes in the community, evolving fashion trends, pandemics, wildfires, and more, Great Labels is so much more than a store to many. And if you didn't know already, we are a woman-led and woman-owned small business in Santa Monica, with Wilshire Blvd as our home for the last 29 years. To celebrate this milestone, our owner, Andrea Waters, reflects on past years and shares her insight on running a designer consignment store for almost three decades:

What do you remember during the first year of opening Great Labels?

I remember being excited from the very first day. Opening my doors for business was a very exciting time, and I saw the wonderful reactions and the sales coming in. I made new friends, gained clients, and was amazed at how wonderful the women were and how much support I received.

What is your favorite memory?

Picking up from a consignor who had over 100 pairs of "new in the box" Manolo Blahniks. This was during the Carrie Bradshaw era when women wanted anything Carrie had. It was glorious!!

What is the biggest challenge you have faced?

Having to say "No thank you" to consignors who have taken the time to bring their items into the store. We base our selection on what our clientele likes to buy. Unfortunately, we have to turn away consignments, and it's challenging to let them know that the items may be outdated or in poor condition without hurting their feelings.

Biggest lesson learned?

Treat customers and consignors with dignity and respect. This was my vision from day one, and it has paid off.

What is your favorite item that has been brought into the store?

A one-of-a-kind white Jean Paul Gaultier full-length fur coat that was a work of art.
