Don’t Over Spend! Go To Great Labels Instead!

I read this great blog post by Suzanne O’Connor over at BargainsLA.com about over spending. She suggests
[B]e careful you don’t fall into the trap of buying something you don’t need or wont use just because you can get a deal on it.

That’s certainly some great advice!

She identifies the key questions on how we rationalize over spending and the things that we must ask ourselves before we justify a big purchase (or purchases)!

Some sound advice. Check it out!

And remember you don’t have to justify anything at Great Labels! Hehe. We’ve always got some amazing fashions, shoes and accessories at 50-75% off the retail price. Shop smart AND look good. Certainly nothing wrong with that. :)

Need a good fashion documentary? Check this out!

Need a good documentary about fashion? This has got to be the one you get.

I came across this trailer for the documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor and it looks absolutely fantastic! Check it out:

Apparently the filmmakers got an incredible amount of access to Valentino and his inner-circle between June 2005 and July 2007. They got 250 hours (wow!) of footage that they had to cut down to 90-ish minutes.

Has anyone seen this yet? It came out on DVD back in early September and should make for a great movie night. I can’t wait to check it out and get a look into the crazy world of Valentino.

It should be on Netflix soon or you can buy it on Amazon.com!

Harvard Does Fashion!

Harvard … Yes, that Harvard is coming out with a clothing line!

Harvard has approved a new line of expensive prep clothing, called “Harvard Yard,” to generate money for Harvard’s undergraduate financial aid program, a deal that has drawn mixed reactions from students and intense media coverage in late-night television, celebrity gossip blogs, and major newspapers.
[The Harvard Crimson]

Wait a second … Are we supposed to take this seriously?

I guess it’s nice that they’re trying to find creative ways to fund their financial aid program. I mean, Harvard is pretty expensive as it is!

Shows like Mad Men have definitely renewed an interest in slick-’60s fashions but these Harvard Yard fashions seem too stiff and preppy.

Even Perez Hilton has something to say about it!

“Where The Wild Things Are” on the runway?

I think everyone remembers “Where The Wild Things Are,” right??

It’s an absolutely wonderful and an absolutely classic children’s book!

The film just opened! Has anyone seen it yet? It looks like it’s a wonderful film too:

So, it’s a classic book. It could be a classic film. Is it going to be a classic fashion line?!

Don’t look now but Opening Ceremony has a bunch of fashions and accessories inspired by the book and the film. Yes, that bodysuit in the picture above? You can buy it! How exciting!

The accessories look fantastic and some of the coats and jackets look great as well.

What a wonderful idea! Apparently the director Spike Jonze helped develop this line. I love the cross-promotion!

Be sure to check out www.OpeningCeremony.us to see the entire line!

The Uniform Project: Doin’ A Lot With A Little

I love the message and the vibe behind The Uniform Project.

Basically this girl – Akanksha – is committing to wearing just one dress for an entire year. Each day she reinvents her look by adding layers and accessories that are all vintage, hand-made or hand-me-downs. She calls it “an exercise in sustainable fashion.”

I think it’s a fantastic way to show how we can make the best of the fashions that we have by adding the right accessories.

I like the “recycle” and “reuse” attitude of The Uniform Project. That’s certainly the attitude we try to encourage here at Great Labels!

Head to www.theuniformproject.com/ to check out Akanksha’s daily fashions and to see how you can help!

Snuggies On The Runway At New York Fashion Week?!

Wait, what?!

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard the news: The makers of the Snuggie – that weird blanket with sleeves – pulled off a runway show at New York Fashion Week just a couple weeks ago.

The much-parodied Snuggie infomercial, in which Snuggie-clad actors eat popcorn and read on the couch and stand to cheer at a football game, was intended to have “a little cheek,” said Linda Hotz of the Allstar Marketing Group, which makes the Snuggie. But the company had no idea it would become a pop culture touchstone.

“People just took it to the next level and we decided to go with them,” she said.
[AP]

The next level is a runway show and I’ll be honest with you, it’s pretty hilarious. After all, we’re still talking about it, right?

There is a hilarious video of the runway show on the Snuggie Fan Club web site.

There are various limited edition prints (including a leopard print that might even make Diane von Furstenberg jealous. Maybe. Hehe.) and even Snuggies for your dog!

I’m still chuckling about it. I like that the Snuggie people have a good sense of humor.

Of course, they’d have the last laugh if we see Prada with Snuggie-style outfits on the runway next season… LOL!

Lady Gaga At The MTV Video Music Awards

Say what you want about Lady Gaga and her music but fashionistas think that she may become a fashion icon!
Celebrity stylist Robert Verdi said Gaga’s debut at the VMAs has her poised to join some of the greatest women in pop music. “I actually love her,” he said. “I think there have been these moments in the canon of fashion history and music history that have been very important and are marked by Cher, Madonna and now Lady Gaga.”
[MTV]

She certainly has a flair for the dramatic!

Her red carpet look (above) was designed by Jean Paul Gaultier!

In response to the global economic downturn, the fashion world has been slowly shifting towards more a bit more conservative designs while retailers are also shifting more towards some basic fashions.

But fashion designers must be going “gaga” over the chance to design some cutting-edge fashion for Lady Gaga.

MTV has a great photo album of all of her looks! Check it out and let me know what you think!

Reusing Is Better Than Recycling

I’m always looking for ways to go green and help the environment. Humans have created a lot of problems on Earth and we have to do our part to help fix it!

I stumbled across this old article titled “Why Reuse Beats Recyling.” It was written back in 1999 but I think the points are still valid today:

Reuse is accomplished through many different methods: Purchasing durable goods, buying and selling in the used marketplace, borrowing, renting, subscribing to business waste exchanges and making or receiving charitable transfers.

It is also achieved by attending to maintenance and repair, as well as by designing in relation to reuse.

This may mean developing products that are reusable, long-lived, capable of being remanufactured or creatively refashioning used items.

The article goes on to explain that recycling is different from reusing. When something it recycled it actually has to be reprocessed into something else.

But when you reuse something, you keep the original “energy” that was used to produce that item and you save energy on disposal or even recycling costs!

So, how does this apply to a consignment boutique like Great Labels?

Simple!

Great Labels helps create a “reuse cycle”!

If more people take care of their fashion, then we can buy it from our clients, and sell it for a better price (but still at a fraction of the original retail cost).

The result is a lot of happy things:

  • Happy clients who get more money in their pockets.
  • Happy buyers who get great deals on high-end designer labels.
  • A happy closet that’s rid of the stuff you don’t want and filled with the stuff you DO want.
  • And a happy Earth because we’re reusing!

Reducing and Reusing isn’t just for paper, cans and glass anymore. It applies to designer fashion too!

So, I guess you could say that buying and selling at Great Labels is a way to help the environment and save the Earth!

I think that good reason for consignment shopaholics everywhere! ;)
